Mike Miller, Southwest Virginia Photographer
Mike Miller is a self-taught outsider artist who, for more than a decade, has been using iPhones to create masked self-portraits.
His photographs may be the stuff of nightmares, but they speak volumes about life in the twenty-first century, while exploring a surreal territory filled with weirdlings, shapeshifters, and demons.
Miller believes it is his mask that both protects him and allows him to enter into that dark, subterranean world.
“I’ve always covered my face a lot, even when I was younger,” Miller says. “Maybe I think it will hide the other side of me, or maybe it’s a way to let people know I have another side without letting it out.”
Mike’s first one-person photography show, “The Masked Man,” was held at Create Appalachia Center for Art & Technology, Kingsport, Tennessee, from March 10 to May 16, 2023.
