Mike Miller, Southwest Virginia Photographer
Mike Miller is a self taught outsider artist who, using only his iPhone camera with no added special digital effects, has been creating masked self-portraits for more than a decade.
His photographs may be the stuff of nightmares, but they speak volumes about life in the twenty-first century, while exploring a surreal territory filled with weirdlings, shapeshifters, and demons that appear clearly in his work.
Miller believes it is his mask that both protects and allows him to enter that dark, subterranean world. He traces his lifelong fascination with masks to his childhood.
“I’ve always covered my face a lot even when I was younger. Maybe I think it will hide the other side of me. Or maybe it’s a way to let people know I have another side without letting it out.”
Mike’s first one-person photography show “The Masked Man” was held at Create Appalachia Center for Art & Technology, Kingsport, Tennessee from March 10 to May 16, 2023 .
